New Season of Talks
After a bit of a rocky ride over the summer months with three of our carefully selected speakers having to pull out at short notice for health reasons, Stour Astronomical Society is now back on track with a full programme over the next twelve months of exciting and up-to-the-minute subject matter.
Firstly, we apologise to all our regular supporters and attendees for these unscheduled changes and cancellations. We thank you for your patience and look forward to seeing you on the first Tuesday of each month in Cavendish’s Memorial Hall, CO10 8AD, 7.30 pm with refreshment provided.
Just to give a flavour of the excellent talks ahead, here are some of the subjects we’ll be presenting.
We start in October with "Solar Eclipses and Where to Go to see these in 2026/27", followed in November by "Big Measurements - the Amazing Big Numbers of the Universe” and “The Very Latest on Dark Matter and Dark Energy” in December.
For 2026, we have speakers lined up on Famous Astronomers, Saturn, Variable Stars, Hawking’s Black Holes, Jupiter, Astro Photography, Meteorites and The Hubble Space Telescope. A cracking lineup to whet your enthusiasm for the Greatest Show on Earth or anywhere in the Universe for that matter.
We look forward to welcoming all comers, beginners and experts alike for congenial evenings each first Tuesday of the month.

An astronomy club in West Suffolk
The Stour Astronomical Society was established in March 2003 by Dr Kevin Marshall and Geoff Burling. Its main aim is to fill a void in the county of Suffolk where there is a lot of interest in astronomy but very few places to go and meet other amateur astronomers. Also members can listen to talks given by expert speakers, receive advice on what equipment you perhaps would like to buy and what to observe in the night sky. Members are drawn from nearby towns and villages in the Stour Valley area.
At the moment one either has to travel over to Cambridge or Orwell, both having first-class astronomical societies but nevertheless quite some distance away. So please come along on the first Tuesday of the month to meet fellow amateurs and to deepen your love of the wonders of the night sky. Please don’t forget to tell any friends you have who might also be interested in astronomy!
